Raven Chacon’s Sound-and-Art Symphony
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Holland Cotter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A single work of art can get into your system and stay there. I’ve been living with — haunted by — one by the Navajo composer and sound artist Raven Chacon since encountering it in the 2022 Whitney Biennial. Titled “Silent Choir (Standing Rock),” it had no visual element. Even then, the only sound was the rustle of breathing, of bodies shifting and of the high-up buzz of surveillance helicopters. The same year as the Biennial, Chacon was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music for a different, more traditionally “musical” piece, “Voiceless Mass” (2021).

The men are all migrants who have come up against New York City’s 30-day limit for single adults on stays at any one homeless shelter. As of Tuesday, several migrants said, the city had reached people with numbers in the 14,000s. For those with higher numbers, the city offered only a spot on the floor or a chair at one of a handful of waiting centers scattered around the five boroughs. New York City has a unique “right to shelter” that requires it to provide a bed to every homeless person who asks. In recent weeks, however, for increasing numbers of migrants, the guarantee has become something that exists only on paper.

Never has “silence” been more resounding. (Chacon went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in music last year.) My 2023-24 go-to list includes other potentially horizon-expanding group shows, all historical. During the “global” moment a few decades back New York museums, large and small, regularly gave us valuable introductory samplings of unfamiliar (here, anyway) contemporary work from Asia. “Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s-1970s” at the Guggenheim Museum (Sept. 1-Jan. 7) is in the line of such shows and welcome in the present international spotlighting of Korean culture.

Jan 16 (Reuters) - Teachers, retirees and workers' unions marched in at least six Venezuelan cities on Monday to demand better salaries, as the government of President Nicolas Maduro faces renewed challenges in its attempt to fight inflation. The minimum monthly salary for a public school teacher is about $10, while university professors earn between $60 and $80. I earn 460 bolivars a month (about $23)," said Odalis Aguilar, a 50-year-old teacher who marched in the city of Maracay. In the central state of Carabobo, teachers and public employees also held demonstrations, saying salaries do not cover the cost of food and medicine. Over the weekend the government paid public employees a bonus equivalent to $29.80.

Ron DeSantis flew to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in a political stunt. Our organization is a network of groups that help immigrants achieve a sustainable way of life throughout the Americas. Ultimately, the Martha’s Vineyard case is an opportunity to reflect on how we can do better, honoring the critical role migrants play in bettering our nation. Overall, our immigration laws are obsolete and impractical. The Martha’s Vineyard lawsuit is a chance for us to revisit the conversation about whether we are truly prepared to honor our promise of being a country that welcomes immigrants.
That’s five times more than the number of teams represented in the first Winter Games in Chamonix, France in 1924. “They want to keep the girls pretty, in a special way,” Bonaly told CNN Sport as she reflected on her career. India has never won a medal at the Winter Games and does not have a prominent winter sports federation, Keshavan told CNN Sport. Shiva Keshavan of India reacts following run 3 during the Luge Men's Singles on day two of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Hopefully, it just encourages more and more Black athletes to come out to winter sports and not just Black athletes, winter sports for everybody.
America’s relationship to gun ownership is unique, and its gun culture is a global outlier. It is then unsurprising that the US has more deaths from gun violence than any other developed country per capita. A 2019 study published in the British Medical Journal found that US states with more permissive gun laws and greater gun ownership had higher rates of mass shootings. A decade of gun violence, culminating with the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, prompted the Australian government to take action. Many countries around the world have been able to tackle gun violence.
